Hejira
To me, this is one of the most brilliant passages of
Jaco's playing captured on a recording. It's unique because it's not the fast
flashy bass playing he's famous for, but rather a subtle, supportive role for
Brecker's soprano solo. Like "Cannonball", this contains elements of 16th-note
funk and much syncopation, though in the context of a sensitive groove with no
drumset and no prominent backbeat (2&4).
One definition of "Hejira"
means a flight or departure; any flight or journey to a more desirable or
congenial place than where one is.
